Germany Begin World Cup 2026 Campaign with Convincing Win Over Curacao
Germany made a strong start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a 7-1 victory over tournament debutants Curacao in their Group E opener in Houston on Sunday.
The four-time world champions recovered quickly from an early setback to secure an important three points and take an early step toward qualification for the knockout stage.
Felix Nmecha gave Germany the lead in the sixth minute with a well-taken strike after being set up by Florian Wirtz. Curacao responded unexpectedly through Livano Comenencia, whose effort found the net to level the score and briefly energize the Caribbean side’s supporters.
Germany soon regained control of the match and restored their advantage before halftime. Defender Nico Schlotterbeck scored his first international goal with a header from a corner, while Kai Havertz converted a penalty to give his side a comfortable lead heading into the break.
The Germans continued their dominance in the second half. Jamal Musiala extended the advantage shortly after the restart, finishing from a Joshua Kimmich pass. Nathaniel Brown added another goal before substitute Deniz Undav found the net later in the match.
Havertz completed his brace with Germany’s seventh goal, capping an impressive attacking display from Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
While Curacao showed determination in their first-ever World Cup appearance, Germany’s experience and quality ultimately proved decisive as they controlled possession and created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the contest.
The result puts Germany in a strong position in Group E, where tougher challenges await against Ecuador and Ivory Coast in the coming matches.
Germany, seeking a return to the knockout rounds after several disappointing World Cup campaigns, will take confidence from an efficient and entertaining opening performance.
