CM Maryam Nawaz Sets One-Week Deadline to Address Corruption in Punjab Police
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the Inspector General of Punjab Police to identify and take action against officers facing corruption allegations within one week.
The directive was issued during a high-level meeting on law and order, where the chief minister called for stronger accountability across the police department. She also directed authorities to ensure that officers with a history of serious misconduct are not appointed as Station House Officers (SHOs).
Focus on Police Accountability
Maryam Nawaz instructed the police leadership to adopt a strict policy against corruption and improve oversight within the department.
She also called for stronger measures to protect women and children from crime and directed officials to prepare a comprehensive strategy to address such cases.
The chief minister said police officials at the district level would be held accountable in areas where crime remains high.
New Measures for Punjab Police
The meeting also approved several measures aimed at improving policing and public safety.
The operational control of Dolphin Police will be connected with the relevant police stations to improve coordination and response.
The chief minister also set September 30 as the deadline for equipping Punjab Police personnel with body cameras.
Additional measures were discussed to improve the monitoring of prisoners. These include the installation of GPS tracking systems and cameras in prisoner vans.
Action Against Crime
Maryam Nawaz directed police authorities to strengthen operations against burglary and approved a special drive to address crime-related concerns in Sheikhupura.
She also called for strict action in cases involving prisoner escapes and emphasized the need for better monitoring and accountability.
According to the Punjab Inspector General of Police, crime statistics have shown improvement in several categories. Robbery cases were reported to have declined by 54 percent, while murder cases fell by 35 percent.
Car robbery cases decreased by 46 percent, and motorcycle theft cases were reported to be down by 53 percent.
The chief minister said maintaining law and order and protecting the lives and property of citizens remain key priorities for the Punjab government.
She also emphasized that the protection of women and children would receive particular attention in the province’s policing strategy.
