Construction Begins on Cricket Stadium for Los Angeles 2028 Olympics

Cricket’s return to the Olympic Games after more than a century has reached a major milestone, with construction officially beginning on a dedicated venue for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place at Fairplex Grounds in Pomona, California, with officials from the International Cricket Council (ICC) in attendance.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah described the start of construction as a significant moment for the sport, highlighting cricket’s growing global reach and its inclusion in the Olympic movement.

He said the development reflects ongoing efforts to expand cricket beyond its traditional regions and introduce it to new audiences worldwide.

Expanding Cricket Globally

ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta noted that the Olympics provide a valuable platform to promote cricket internationally and attract new fans, especially among younger generations.

Officials believe that cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics will help accelerate the sport’s global growth and increase participation across different regions.

Olympic Format

Cricket competitions at the Los Angeles Games are expected to feature the T20 format for both men’s and women’s teams, offering a fast-paced version of the game suited to the Olympic schedule.

Historic Return

Cricket was last played in the Olympics in 1900, making its return after 128 years a landmark moment for the sport.

The new stadium is expected to play a key role in delivering the cricket events and supporting the sport’s expansion in the United States.
