Luis Diaz Leads Colombia to Winning Start Against World Cup Debutants Uzbekistan

Colombia began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over tournament newcomers Uzbekistan in Group K at Estadio Azteca on Wednesday.

Goals from Daniel Munoz, Luis Diaz, and Jaminton Campaz secured all three points for the South American side, while Uzbekistan earned praise for a determined performance in their first-ever World Cup match.

Colombia controlled much of the opening half, creating several opportunities through Jhon Arias and James Rodriguez. Uzbekistan remained organized defensively and looked to capitalize on counterattacks whenever possible.

The breakthrough came in the 40th minute when Luis Diaz delivered a precise pass to Daniel Munoz, who calmly finished to give Colombia a deserved lead before halftime.

Uzbekistan responded positively after the break and made history in the 60th minute by scoring the nation’s first World Cup goal. Following a save by Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas, Abbosbek Fayzullaev reacted quickest to head home the rebound and level the match.

However, Colombia regained the advantage just five minutes later. Gustavo Puerta set up Luis Diaz, who finished confidently to restore his team’s lead and energize the large Colombian crowd inside the stadium.

Despite continued efforts from Uzbekistan, Colombia remained dangerous in attack. Jaminton Campaz sealed the victory in stoppage time with a late goal, ensuring a comfortable result for Nestor Lorenzo’s side.

The win continues Colombia’s strong record in World Cup group-stage matches and provides an ideal start to their tournament journey. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, showed promising signs in their World Cup debut and will look to build on the experience in their upcoming matches.

In another notable milestone, Uzbekistan coach Fabio Cannavaro became one of the few Ballon d’Or winners to participate in the World Cup both as a player and as a head coach.

Uzbekistan will next face Portugal in Houston, while Ecuador take on DR Congo in Guadalajara as Group K action continues.
