First Qatari LNG Shipment Since July Arrives in Pakistan
Karachi: A liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment from Qatar has reached Pakistan, marking the first Qatari LNG cargo to pass through the Strait of Hormuz and arrive in the country since July.
The vessel Al Marrouna, carrying approximately 82,000 tonnes of LNG from Qatar’s Ras Laffan terminal, crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Monday before reaching the Engro LNG Terminal at Port Qasim on Thursday morning, according to port authorities.
First Qatar-Origin Cargo Since July 11
The latest shipment is the first LNG cargo originating from Qatar to reach Pakistan through the strategic waterway since July 11.
Regular LNG shipments arranged through QatarEnergy had faced disruptions following the escalation of regional tensions and conflict, raising concerns about the continuity of Pakistan’s energy supplies.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for Pakistan’s imports of LNG and crude oil, making any prolonged disruption a major concern for the country’s energy sector.
LNG Shipment to Support Power Generation
The cargo was purchased under a government-to-government agreement between Pakistan and Qatar.
Its arrival is expected to improve LNG availability for the power sector and provide some temporary relief as Pakistan continues to deal with fuel shortages and elevated energy costs.
The latest shipment has also reduced immediate concerns over a prolonged interruption in Qatari LNG supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
Energy Supply Challenges Continue
Pakistan is currently experiencing power outages lasting around six to 12 hours in some areas amid higher fuel costs linked to renewed tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
The government has also introduced a daily fuel pricing mechanism in an effort to respond more quickly to fluctuations in international crude oil prices.
Despite the arrival of the Qatari cargo, energy-sector stakeholders remain concerned that any further escalation in the Gulf region could affect both LNG and crude oil supplies.
Pakistan Explores Alternative Oil Sources
Pakistan has also begun importing limited quantities of crude oil from the United States as part of efforts to diversify its energy supplies.
However, the longer transportation route from the US has resulted in higher shipping and overall import costs.
