Geely Unveils Ultra-Fast EV Charger That Can Add 60% Battery in 4.5 Minutes
Geely has unveiled a new ultra-fast electric vehicle charging system capable of delivering up to 2.25 megawatts (MW) of power through a single charging gun.
The Chinese automaker says its new Geely Smart Charge system can charge compatible electric vehicles from 10% to 70% in around 4.5 minutes, bringing EV charging times closer to the duration of a conventional fuel stop.
Geely Smart Charge Reaches 2.25MW
The new charging system combines high-power charging hardware with artificial intelligence-based battery and thermal management technology.
Geely claims the charger can provide a peak output of 2,250kW, or 2.25MW, using a single charging gun.
During testing, a Lynk & Co 10 fitted with Geely’s latest battery technology achieved a peak charging rate of 1,093kW. The vehicle reportedly went from 10% to 70% charge in approximately 4.5 minutes and reached 97% in about 8 minutes and 40 seconds.
The figures apply to vehicles equipped with compatible batteries and charging systems.
AI Technology Controls Battery Temperature
High-power charging can generate significant heat, making thermal management an important part of ultra-fast EV charging.
Geely has integrated its Xingrui PowerMind energy model into the charging system to monitor and predict changes in battery temperature.
The technology adjusts charging power in real time and is designed to keep the battery within appropriate thermal limits while maintaining high charging speeds.
New Battery Technology Supports Faster Charging
Geely also introduced its latest Aegis Golden Brick ultra-short blade battery technology alongside the charging system.
The company’s higher-performance 12C battery is being used in vehicles including the Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001.
A 6C battery is also being introduced in the upgraded Geely Galaxy E5. According to the company, this battery can charge from 10% to 70% in approximately 8 minutes and 25 seconds.
Geely’s 4.5-minute charging figure therefore applies to vehicles equipped with the higher-rate battery technology and suitable charging hardware.
Geely Enters the High-Speed Charging Competition
EV manufacturers in China are increasingly focusing on charging speed alongside driving range as they work to make electric vehicles more convenient for everyday use.
BYD has also developed high-power charging technology that it says can charge compatible vehicles from 10% to 97% in around nine minutes.
Geely’s latest system adds another high-speed charging option to the rapidly developing EV market.
Geely executive Zhang Dewang said charging speeds are getting closer to physical limits, which could mean that future improvements in charging times become smaller as battery and charging technologies develop.
Charging Infrastructure Remains Important
Ultra-fast charging technology can only deliver its full benefits when suitable charging infrastructure is available.
Vehicles capable of accepting megawatt-level power require compatible charging stations and electrical infrastructure to achieve the advertised charging speeds.
Geely plans to expand its charging network in China, with a target of more than 100,000 charging guns by the end of 2027. The company expects more than 50,000 of these to be Geely Smart Charge units.
The automaker has also extended eligible battery warranties from eight years or 150,000 kilometres to eight years or 200,000 kilometres and plans to offer charging credits to buyers of compatible vehicles.
What It Could Mean for Pakistan
Geely is preparing to expand its presence in Pakistan’s automotive market and has announced plans to introduce electric vehicles, including the Geely EX5 SUV.
The international version of the EX5 is based on the Galaxy E5 platform. However, Geely has not yet confirmed the exact battery and charging specifications that will be offered in Pakistan.
The availability of suitable charging infrastructure will also be an important factor in determining whether Pakistani EV owners can benefit from the latest ultra-fast charging technology.
Faster Charging Could Change the EV Experience
Geely’s new 2.25MW charging system demonstrates the rapid development of EV charging technology, particularly in China.
The company’s 4.5-minute figure is based on a specific combination of battery technology, vehicle and charging hardware rather than all EVs.
For wider adoption, automakers will need to expand compatible charging networks while ensuring that vehicles and batteries can safely handle increasingly high charging power.
