GLOF and Rain Alert Issued for Upper Districts of Pakistan
Authorities have issued a warning about the possible risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as rain is expected in several parts of the province from August 31 to September 4.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said that rainfall combined with rising temperatures could accelerate glacier melting. This may increase water levels in glacial lakes and raise the possibility of sudden flooding in vulnerable areas.
PDMA Directs Districts to Monitor Risk Areas
The PDMA has alerted the administrations of Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan and Mansehra.
District authorities have been directed to maintain regular monitoring of locations considered vulnerable to GLOF activity and ensure that warnings are communicated to residents in a timely manner if conditions deteriorate.
Residents have also been advised to stay away from rivers, streams, glacial lakes and narrow mountain valleys, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Tourists and travellers have been encouraged to avoid unnecessary trips, camping and trekking in areas where flooding or landslides may pose a risk.
NDMA Issues Weather Outlook
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), through its National Emergencies Operation Centre, has also issued a weather outlook covering August 30 to September 4.
The forecast indicates that thunderstorms, strong winds and rainfall may affect parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.
Rain Expected in Punjab
Several districts of Punjab may experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Areas mentioned in the forecast include:

- Rawalpindi
- Islamabad
- Attock
- Chakwal
- Jhelum
- Mianwali
- Khushab
- Sargodha
- Gujrat
- Sialkot
- Gujranwala
- Hafizabad
- Narowal
- Sheikhupura
- Faisalabad
- Lahore
- Kasur
- Okara
Most other parts of Punjab are expected to remain hot and humid, with daytime temperatures likely to increase.
Rain Forecast for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may receive rain, thunderstorms and strong winds, while heavy rainfall is possible at some locations.
The forecast includes Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Bajaur, Shangla, Battagram, Buner and Mansehra.
Given the possibility of heavy rainfall in some mountainous areas, residents and visitors are advised to follow local administration and weather-related warnings.
Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir
Rain and thunderstorms are also expected in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, affected areas may include Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Ghizer, Diamer and Astore.
In Azad Kashmir, showers are forecast for Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Poonch, Bagh, Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber.
Both regions are expected to remain generally hot and humid, with daytime temperatures likely to rise.
