Government Proposes Rs. 2,000 Monthly Petrol Relief for Motorcycle Owners
ISLAMABAD: The federal government has approved a proposal to provide financial assistance to motorcycle owners facing higher petrol and diesel prices.
Under the proposed relief scheme, eligible motorcyclists could receive Rs. 2,000 per month to help cover their fuel expenses. At current petrol prices, the amount would be equivalent to roughly five litres of petrol.
According to media reports, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the proposed assistance for an initial period of three months. The government is expected to review the scheme afterward, depending on available funds and the prevailing regional situation.
Rs. 2,000 Monthly Fuel Assistance
The proposed program is aimed at providing targeted support to motorcycle users rather than reducing fuel prices for all consumers.
Relevant government departments are currently working on the mechanism through which the financial assistance would be distributed to eligible beneficiaries.
However, details regarding eligibility criteria, registration, payment method and the exact launch date have yet to be finalized.
Government Keeps Petroleum Levy Unchanged
The proposed relief package does not involve a reduction in the petroleum levy.
The Finance Ministry has reportedly opposed proposals to reduce the levy, which remains an important source of revenue for the government.
Petroleum levy collections reached approximately Rs. 1.567 trillion during the previous fiscal year, highlighting the importance of the levy to government finances.
Instead of lowering the levy or reducing fuel prices across the board, the latest proposal focuses on providing direct financial assistance to a specific group of consumers.
Rising Fuel Prices Increase Household Expenses
The government has attributed the recent increase in domestic fuel prices to higher international oil prices and developments in the Middle East.
As petrol and diesel prices rise, motorcycle users, transport operators and other consumers face higher daily commuting and transportation costs.
The proposed Rs. 2,000 monthly payment could provide some short-term assistance to motorcycle owners. However, the amount would not reduce the actual retail price of petrol and diesel.
The effectiveness of the scheme will largely depend on its eligibility criteria, distribution mechanism and the government’s ability to continue funding it after the initial three-month period.
