Govt Moves Closer to Import-Free Soda Ash Production in Pakistan

The government has achieved major progress on the Sapphire Soda Ash Production Project, marking an important step toward reducing Pakistan’s dependence on imported soda ash.

Under the project, 2.7 cusecs of water have been allocated from the Mohajir Canal in Khushab to support the plant’s operational requirements. The development is expected to strengthen the project’s viability and boost local industrial production.

Soda ash is an essential raw material widely used in industries such as glass manufacturing, detergents, textiles, and chemicals. Increased domestic production is likely to improve supply chain stability and help reduce the country’s import burden.

The project is also expected to support industrial growth by enhancing local manufacturing capacity and creating new employment opportunities.

Officials believe the initiative will contribute positively to Pakistan’s economy by promoting industrial development and encouraging import substitution in a sector that still relies heavily on foreign supplies.
