Haaland’s Late Goal Sends Norway Past Ivory Coast Into FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Norway secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Ivory Coast 2-1 on Tuesday, with Erling Haaland scoring a dramatic late winner in Texas.

The Manchester City striker found the decisive goal in the 86th minute, finishing from close range after connecting with a cross from Patrick Berg. The goal marked Haaland’s fifth of the tournament and sealed Norway’s first-ever knockout-stage victory in FIFA World Cup history.

The win sets up an exciting Round of 16 meeting between Norway and five-time world champions Brazil.

After a quiet opening period, Norway broke the deadlock six minutes before halftime through Antonio Nusa. The young forward collected a pass from captain Martin Odegaard before cutting inside and curling a superb effort into the top corner, giving Norway a deserved advantage.

Ivory Coast responded with greater attacking intent in the second half. Substitute Amad Diallo made an immediate impact, first preventing Norway from extending their lead with a goal-line clearance before producing an excellent equalizer in the 74th minute with a composed solo finish.

As the match appeared to be heading toward extra time, Haaland once again delivered when it mattered most. Patrick Berg’s cross found the striker inside the penalty area, and his close-range finish proved enough to send Norway into the next round.

Ivory Coast pushed for another equalizer in the closing moments, but Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland made an important save from Diallo’s late free kick to preserve his team’s lead.

Martin Odegaard played a key role in Norway’s attacking play throughout the match, while Antonio Nusa’s outstanding first-half strike stood out as one of the finest goals of the tournament so far.

Norway will now prepare for a challenging encounter against Brazil, with a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals at stake. After making history with their first knockout-stage victory, the Scandinavian side will be hoping to continue their impressive run on football’s biggest stage
