Mexico Makes History with Perfect Group Stage, Defeats Czech Republic 3-0

Report: Imran Sohail

Mexico secured a historic achievement at the FIFA World Cup, defeating the Czech Republic 3-0 on Wednesday to complete a perfect group-stage campaign for the first time in tournament history.

Goals from Mateo Chávez, Julián Quiñones, and Álvaro Fidalgo helped Mexico finish top of Group A with three wins from three matches, continuing an impressive run under head coach Javier Aguirre.

After a tightly contested first half, 22-year-old Mateo Chávez broke the deadlock in the 55th minute with his first-ever World Cup goal. Just six minutes later, Julián Quiñones doubled Mexico’s lead with his second goal of the tournament.

Álvaro Fidalgo added a third goal in stoppage time to seal a convincing victory and underline Mexico’s strong form heading into the knockout stage.

“This is a very special moment for me,” Chávez said after scoring his first World Cup goal. “It’s something I dreamed about for a long time.”

Mexico’s previous best group-stage performances came in 1986 and 2002, when the team recorded two wins and one draw. Both tournaments featured Javier Aguirre, first as a player and later as head coach.

By finishing first in Group A, Mexico has earned a place in the Round of 32 and will return to play at Estadio Azteca on Tuesday against an opponent yet to be determined.
