Heavy Monsoon Rains Cause Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions in Lahore
Heavy monsoon rainfall affected Lahore on Thursday, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion, and disruptions to daily life in many parts of the city.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Lahore received 343 millimetres of rainfall over the past 48 hours, prompting authorities to warn of possible urban flooding as the current monsoon spell continues.
Waterlogging Reported Across the City
Rainwater accumulated at more than 130 locations, affecting major roads, intersections, residential areas, and underpasses.
Some of the most affected areas included:
- DHA Phases 1 to 5
- Mall Road
- Cooper Road
- Lakshmi Chowk
- Chouburji Chowk
- Harbanspura
In several low-lying areas, standing water caused delays for commuters and slowed the movement of traffic.
Underpasses Closed Due to Flooding
Heavy water accumulation led to the temporary closure of several underpasses, including:
- Ghazi Underpass
- Masjid Chowk Underpass
Traffic authorities diverted vehicles to alternate routes to reduce congestion and improve public safety.
Motorists also experienced slow traffic on Main Boulevard DHA and surrounding roads because of flooded streets.
Emergency Drainage Operations Underway
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Lahore said its teams remained on high alert and continued emergency drainage operations in affected areas.
WASA officials monitored water removal efforts at several locations, including Mall Road, Cooper Road, Lakshmi Chowk, and Chouburji Chowk, to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.
Rain Exposes Urban Drainage Challenges
The heavy rainfall also highlighted ongoing drainage issues in parts of the city.
Residents in some low-lying neighborhoods reported water entering homes, while several vehicles became stranded on flooded roads, causing additional travel delays.
Authorities also reported the appearance of sinkholes on roads, including sections of Canal Road, Johar Town Main Boulevard, and Bhekay Wala Mor. Traffic was diverted while repair and safety measures were initiated.
PDMA Advises Public to Stay Cautious
The PDMA has instructed district administrations across Punjab to remain on high alert due to the possibility of further heavy rainfall.
The authority has advised the public to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
- Stay away from flooded roads and underpasses.
- Avoid weak buildings and low-lying areas.
- Keep a safe distance from electricity poles and exposed wires during rainfall.
Officials continue to monitor the weather situation as additional monsoon showers are forecast for several parts of Punjab in the coming days.
