Hudiara Drain Overflow Inundates Village Near Lahore After Heavy Rains

Heavy monsoon rains have led to increased water levels in the Hudiara Drain, causing flooding in Kanghawala village near Lahore’s Sundar Industrial Estate. The overflow affected streets, homes, and nearby agricultural land, particularly in low-lying areas close to the Ravi River.

According to officials, the flooding occurred after the natural water channel downstream of the engineered section of the drain exceeded its carrying capacity due to increased rainfall.

Flooding Reported in Low-Lying Areas

Residents of Kanghawala village experienced water entering homes and surrounding areas after the drain overflowed. The affected locations are situated within the natural floodplain near the Ravi River.

Local reports indicated that many residents managed the situation on their own, while authorities continued to assess the impact of the flooding.

Officials Inspect Hudiara Drain

District administration officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore, visited the affected area to inspect the situation.

According to the Irrigation Department, the engineered portion of the Hudiara Drain remained operational and allowed water to flow without obstruction. Officials said the flooding occurred farther downstream, where the natural creek carrying the drainage water overflowed because of the higher-than-normal water volume.

The Hudiara Drain originates in India’s Gurdaspur district, enters Pakistan near Lahore, and eventually empties into the Ravi River.

Rivers and Nullahs Continue to Experience High Water Levels

Flood monitoring authorities reported elevated water levels in several rivers and drainage channels due to ongoing monsoon rainfall.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD):

• The River Chenab remains at a high flood level at Chiniot.
• The River Ravi has reached a medium flood level at some monitoring points.
• Several seasonal nullahs are carrying water above their normal capacity following recent rainfall.

PMD Advises Caution

The PMD has warned that continued rainfall may increase the risk of:

• Localized urban flooding in low-lying areas.
• Higher water flows in parts of the Chenab River.
• Flash flooding in hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, streams in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and parts of northern Balochistan.

The department has also advised residents of Lahore, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, and Hafizabad to stay updated with official weather advisories as the monsoon spell continues.

Authorities are continuing to monitor water levels across Punjab and have urged the public to exercise caution, particularly in flood-prone and low-lying areas.
