Ireland and Austria Draw 2-2 After Two Match Interruptions in Dublin
Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail
Ireland and Austria played out a 2-2 draw in their Nations League match in Dublin on Thursday, with the game briefly stopped twice following demonstrations supporting Palestine.
The first interruption came in the 19th minute when spectators threw tennis balls carrying Palestinian flag stickers onto the pitch. Players temporarily left the field before the match resumed.
The game was interrupted again in the 35th minute after a spectator entered the pitch while carrying a Palestinian flag. The individual was removed from the playing area and the match continued.
Austria took the lead twice during the match, but Ireland fought back on both occasions to secure a share of the points.
Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson acknowledged the demonstrations after the match, saying that while such interruptions are not ideal, he understood the reasons behind the protests.
The incidents came days after Ireland’s Nations League match against Israel, which was played in Hungary on Sunday amid controversy surrounding calls for a boycott linked to the Gaza conflict.
Ireland eventually played the match and recorded a 3-0 victory. The Irish players wore black armbands, while the captains of the two teams did not exchange pennants or shake hands before kick-off.
The return fixture between Ireland and Israel is scheduled for Sunday and will again be played at a neutral venue in Serbia. The Irish Football Association previously considered hosting the match at home but decided that the circumstances made such an arrangement too sensitive.
Before Thursday’s game, around 200 people gathered outside the Dublin Arena as part of a protest campaign known as “Stop the Game.”
Ireland has previously recognised a Palestinian state, alongside Spain and Norway, and has repeatedly expressed its position on the conflict in Gaza.
The 2-2 result against Austria gives Ireland another point in the Nations League as the team continues its campaign.
