Markets Remain Closed as JAAC Strike Continues in Muzaffarabad

Shops and business centres remained closed across Muzaffarabad on Tuesday as the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) observed a strike across Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), leading to a sharp reduction in daily activity in the region.

Despite the widespread shutdown, no major demonstrations were reported in the provincial capital. However, traffic remained thin and security forces were deployed in key areas as a precautionary measure.

Situation in Other Areas

Reports from other parts of AJK suggested mixed conditions. In Mirpur, a large number of people gathered at Quaid-i-Azam Stadium, while shop closures and reduced traffic were also observed.

In Kotli, residents reported a complete shutter-down strike, with groups of people moving towards nearby districts as part of coordinated protest activity.

Government Response and Appeal for Dialogue

AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore has urged all stakeholders to return to dialogue in order to reduce tensions in the region. He stressed the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful negotiations rather than confrontation.

Officials have maintained that the issues under dispute require constitutional and legal processes, and cannot be resolved unilaterally.

Background of Protests

The ongoing strike is linked to demands raised by JAAC regarding reserved seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly for refugees who migrated after 1947. The group argues that these seats influence political outcomes, while the government maintains that any changes must follow constitutional procedures.

Authorities had earlier declared JAAC a proscribed organisation and initiated action against its leadership, which further intensified tensions in the region.

Calls for Peaceful Resolution

Human rights organisations have expressed concern over the escalating situation and have urged all parties to avoid further violence. They have called for an impartial investigation into recent incidents involving casualties.

Observers continue to stress the need for dialogue and restraint to prevent further deterioration of the situation in the region.
