New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell will move to a casual contract for the 2026-27 season as he looks to pursue an opportunity in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced on Monday.
The 35-year-old has represented New Zealand 105 times across Tests, ODIs and T20 internationals. He will remain part of the national setup and is expected to feature in the limited-overs series against India later this month.
Bracewell joins Mark Chapman, Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne and Tim Seifert among New Zealand players who have opted for the casual contract arrangement.
The system allows players to take part in overseas T20 leagues while continuing to remain available for New Zealand duty.
Bracewell said the opportunity was particularly appealing because he is now focusing on white-ball cricket.
“As a white-ball only player, this felt like too good of an opportunity to pass up,” Bracewell said.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to the national team and said he was looking forward to the upcoming India tour and future white-ball assignments.
Meanwhile, batter Nick Kelly will take Bracewell’s place on New Zealand Cricket’s central contract list.
The move gives Bracewell greater flexibility to participate in franchise cricket while maintaining his involvement with the Black Caps.
