Mourinho Criticises Referee After Atletico Madrid Beat Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho criticised the refereeing after Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid 2-1 in a heated La Liga derby on Sunday.
Jose Mourinho strongly questioned the refereeing decisions following Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Mourinho pointed to two first-half challenges that he believed should have resulted in red cards for Atletico players.
Mourinho Questions Refereeing Decisions
Real Madrid were unhappy that Atletico defender Cristian Romero was not sent off following a challenge involving Jude Bellingham.
The visitors also raised concerns about a challenge by Lee Kang-in on Federico Valverde.
Real Madrid were eventually reduced to 10 players five minutes into the second half when defender Dean Huijsen was sent off for bringing down Giuliano Simeone inside the penalty area while being the last defender.
Atletico took advantage of the resulting penalty, with Alejandro Grimaldo converting from the spot.
Six minutes later, Jonathan David doubled Atletico’s lead.
Real Madrid managed to reduce the deficit late in the match when Antonio Rudiger headed in from a free kick, but Atletico held on for all three points.
Mourinho Voices Frustration
Speaking after the match, Mourinho displayed images of the two first-half incidents while discussing his concerns over the officiating.
He argued that the decisions had significantly influenced the contest and questioned the appointment of referee Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias.
Mourinho also responded to questions about Real Madrid falling six points behind Barcelona in the standings.
The Real Madrid coach said his team wanted to compete under the same conditions as their rivals and suggested that the disputed decisions should not be interpreted as deliberate.
Simeone Calls for Respect
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone responded to the discussion by urging coaches and football figures to remain respectful when commenting on refereeing decisions.
Simeone said that managers, regardless of their profile or reputation, should be careful about the language they use and avoid crossing the limits of respectful debate.
Rather than focusing on the officiating, Simeone highlighted Atletico’s performance against their city rivals.
Atletico Move Above Real Madrid
Simeone said Atletico defended well against a strong Real Madrid side and maintained their organisation even after the visitors went down to 10 players.
The victory lifted Atletico Madrid to second place with 16 points, five points behind leaders Barcelona.
Real Madrid remained on 15 points, level with Real Betis, while Atletico moved one point ahead of both teams.
The result gives Atletico an important boost in the early La Liga title race, while Real Madrid will look to recover in their upcoming fixtures
