Pakistan Hockey Federation Appoints Dutch Coach Herman Kruis as National Coaching Adviser

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has appointed experienced Dutch coach Herman Kruis as the national hockey coaching adviser on a two-year contract as part of its efforts to strengthen the country’s hockey program.

The announcement comes after Pakistan’s challenging campaign in the 2025-26 FIH Pro League, where the national team finished at the bottom of the standings after 16 matches.

According to the PHF, Kruis brings decades of international coaching experience, having worked with both European and Asian teams. He is widely recognized for developing young players and preparing teams for major international tournaments.

Focus on Long-Term Development

The federation said Kruis will work closely with both the senior and junior national teams to help establish a modern high-performance system for player development.

His responsibilities will include supporting coaching staff, improving talent identification programs, and helping build a sustainable framework for the future of Pakistan hockey.

Kruis is expected to officially begin his assignment during the FIH Hockey World Cup, scheduled to take place from August 15 to August 30, where he will work alongside the current coaching staff during the transition period.

PHF Plans Further International Appointments

PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani described the appointment as the first step in a broader strategy to improve the national hockey setup.

He said the federation also plans to hire additional international specialists in the coming months, including a sports psychologist and a physical trainer, to support player development and overall team performance.

According to Wani, the federation evaluated several international candidates before selecting Kruis based on his experience and long-term vision.

Preparations for Major Tournaments

Following the World Cup, Kruis will help prepare Pakistan’s senior and junior teams for upcoming international competitions, including the Asian Games and other major events on the international hockey calendar.

The PHF recently appointed Tahir Zaman as Director of High Performance. Wani clarified that both Tahir Zaman and Herman Kruis will work together as part of the national coaching structure, alongside the existing coaching staff.

Federation Reports Financial Progress

The PHF president also said the federation’s financial position has improved significantly.

According to Wani, the federation’s available funds have increased to approximately Rs400 million, compared with around Rs2 million when he assumed office. He said the funds will be used primarily for player training, international tours, and development programs.
