President Zardari Orders Stronger Monsoon Preparedness Across Pakistan
President Asif Ali Zardari has directed federal, provincial, and local authorities to strengthen preparedness, rescue, and relief efforts as ongoing monsoon rains continue to affect several parts of Pakistan.
According to an official statement issued by the President’s Secretariat, the country is entering a critical phase of the monsoon season, with forecasts indicating an increased risk of flash floods, urban flooding, landslides, river flooding, cloudbursts, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in vulnerable regions.
Authorities Asked to Stay on High Alert
The President instructed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), and local administrations to work in close coordination and ensure the timely dissemination of weather alerts and emergency information.
He also directed authorities to continuously monitor:
- Rainfall intensity
- River flows and water levels
- Upper catchment areas, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir
Officials have been asked to make advance preparations in downstream areas that may face flooding.
Focus on Rescue, Relief, and Public Safety
The President emphasized the importance of pre-positioning rescue teams and relief supplies while ensuring the safety of vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure.
He also called for special attention to tourists and travelers visiting areas that may be affected by flash floods, landslides, or other weather-related hazards.
Public Advised to Follow Weather Warnings
President Zardari urged citizens to follow official weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel to areas where heavy rainfall or flood warnings have been issued.
He also expressed condolences over the loss of lives and damage to homes, infrastructure, and property caused by recent monsoon rains and appreciated the efforts of rescue workers and emergency personnel involved in relief operations.
Monsoon Rains Continue Across Pakistan
Recent heavy rainfall has affected several regions, including Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, causing casualties and damage to roads, homes, crops, and livestock.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that the ongoing weather system may continue to trigger flash floods, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods in northern parts of the country.
