Punjab Introduces Cashless Fare System for Public Transport
The Government of Punjab has launched a cashless fare payment system for public transport through the eTransit Punjab App and the T-Cash Card, enabling commuters to pay fares digitally across selected transit services.
The initiative has been introduced by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) in collaboration with the Punjab Transport Department and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA).
According to officials, the new system is designed to replace cash payments and physical fare tokens with digital payment options, making the fare collection process more efficient, secure, and convenient for passengers.
Commuters can now pay for their journeys using either the T-Cash Card or the eTransit Punjab mobile application through a unified digital platform. Authorities say the move is expected to reduce waiting times at stations and improve the overall travel experience.
As part of the transition, the Lahore Mass Transit Authority (LMTA) has discontinued the previous token and transit card system for the Orange Line Metro Train, Speedo buses, and Metro Bus services.
LMTA In-charge Uzair Shah said the old transit cards are no longer valid for travel. Passengers who return their discontinued cards will receive only the Rs130 security deposit, while any remaining fare balance on the cards will not be refunded. Card returns can be made at designated stations.
Meanwhile, some commuters have expressed concerns about the transition, saying they were not sufficiently informed about the change. Some passengers also reported confusion regarding the use and recharge of the previous transit cards.
