Punjab to Introduce 1,500 Electric Buses Across 91 Tehsils From January 2027
The Punjab government is set to expand its public transport network by introducing 1,500 electric buses across 91 tehsils from January 2027.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved plans to establish dedicated electric bus depots in each tehsil. The first batch of buses is expected to reach Lahore in January as part of the province-wide expansion.
Punjab Targets 3,000 Electric Buses by June 2027
The provincial government has set an ambitious target of having 3,000 electric buses operational across Punjab by June 2027.
During a meeting held through video link, the chief minister reviewed the progress of the electric bus programme and directed officials to accelerate work on the planned facilities and services.
Under the latest allocation plan, different divisions and districts will receive buses according to their transport requirements.
Bus Allocation Across Major Divisions
The proposed distribution includes:
- Multan: 169 buses for nine tehsils
- Sahiwal: 87 buses for four tehsils
- Bahawalpur: 215 buses for 11 tehsils
- Dera Ghazi Khan: 63 buses for 10 tehsils
- Faisalabad: 202 buses for 12 tehsils
- Sargodha: 98 buses for 14 tehsils
- Gujranwala: 125 buses for seven tehsils
- Gujrat: 122 buses for eight tehsils
- Rawalpindi: 219 buses for 16 tehsils
The expansion is aimed at improving access to modern and affordable public transport for residents across Punjab.
More Electric Buses Planned for Several Districts
According to the briefing, 612 electric buses are already operational in different districts of Punjab and are serving millions of passengers.
Another 192 buses are expected to become operational in Multan and other districts within the coming days.
Additional electric buses are also planned for Sargodha, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Lahore, Muzaffargarh, Rawalpindi, Jhang, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Attock.
The government also plans to expand services in Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot, Layyah, Okara, Sialkot, Murree, Gujrat and Sheikhupura.
Further additions are planned for Mandi Bahauddin, Vehari, Kasur, Lodhran, Nankana Sahib, Narowal, Gujranwala and Multan.
First Phase Target Set for September
The chief minister has directed officials to complete the first phase of the electric bus programme by the end of September 2026.
The initiative is part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to modernize public transportation and provide improved commuting facilities across urban and semi-urban areas.
Mass Transit Projects Also Underway
The meeting was also informed that work on mass transit systems in Faisalabad and Gujranwala is progressing.
Meanwhile, rehabilitation and reconstruction work on 25 stations of the Lahore Metrobus service is also underway.
The projects are expected to strengthen Punjab’s public transport infrastructure while expanding access to modern transit services in major cities and districts.
