Repeated HIV Outbreaks Highlight Healthcare Challenges in Sindh
Sindh has experienced several major HIV outbreaks over the past decade, prompting renewed discussions among public health experts about the need to strengthen infection prevention measures and healthcare oversight across the province.
Medical professionals say that improving infection control, ensuring safe blood transfusion practices, promoting proper syringe use, and enhancing the regulation of healthcare facilities are essential steps to reducing future risks.
Multiple Outbreaks Raise Concerns
One of the earliest major outbreaks occurred in 2016, when several dialysis patients in Larkana tested positive for HIV. The incident led to increased attention on blood transfusion practices and healthcare safety standards.
In 2019, Ratodero experienced one of Pakistan’s largest HIV outbreaks, with more than 1,000 reported cases, many involving children. Investigations by national and international health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), identified unsafe injection practices and the reuse of syringes among the contributing factors.
More recently, additional pediatric HIV cases have been reported in different parts of Sindh, including Khairpur and Karachi, leading authorities to initiate investigations and review healthcare practices.
Experts Call for Stronger Infection Control
Public health specialists say recurring outbreaks point to the need for long-term improvements in:
- Infection prevention and control procedures
- Safe use of syringes and medical equipment
- Blood screening and transfusion safety
- Monitoring and regulation of healthcare facilities
- Training and supervision of healthcare workers
Experts emphasize that consistent implementation of these measures can help reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections.

Medical professionals believe that sustainable reforms, regular inspections, and stronger oversight of both public and private healthcare facilities are important for improving patient safety.
They also stress the need for greater public awareness about safe medical practices and the importance of receiving treatment from licensed healthcare providers.
HIV Situation in Pakistan
Earlier this year, the Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Society of Pakistan (MMIDSP) released a report highlighting the country’s HIV situation.
According to the report, the number of people living with HIV in Pakistan has increased significantly over the past decade. It also noted that many individuals remain undiagnosed or are not yet receiving treatment, underscoring the importance of expanded testing, early diagnosis, and improved access to healthcare services.
Health experts continue to encourage stronger collaboration between healthcare institutions, policymakers, and public health organizations to improve disease prevention, strengthen healthcare systems, and expand access to quality medical care across the country.
