Richard Carapaz claimed victory in Stage 18 of the Tour de France, delivering an impressive performance in the Alpine mountains, while overall race leader Tadej Pogacar faced a setback after one of his key teammates was forced to withdraw due to illness.
Carapaz Secures Stage Victory
The Ecuadorian cyclist launched a decisive attack with just over three kilometres remaining and held off the chasing group to earn his second career Tour de France stage win.
Mauro Schmid of Switzerland finished second, while Matteo Jorgenson of the United States completed the stage podium in third place.
Carapaz’s victory also strengthened his position in the King of the Mountains competition.
Pogacar Retains Overall Lead
Despite the challenges within his team, Tadej Pogacar completed the stage safely alongside his closest rivals and maintained his lead in the overall standings.
However, his team suffered another setback after Brandon McNulty was unable to continue the race because of illness.
The withdrawal came a day after teammate Adam Yates also experienced health issues during Stage 17, although the team expressed hope that he would recover in time for the upcoming stages.
Challenging Stages Ahead
The next two stages are expected to be among the toughest of this year’s Tour, with both scheduled to finish on the famous Alpe d’Huez climb.
Pogacar remains the overall race leader with a comfortable advantage over his nearest challenger and continues to be one of the favorites for the overall title.
King of the Mountains Battle Intensifies
Carapaz’s strong performance brought him closer to the polka-dot jersey, awarded to the leader of the King of the Mountains classification.
Although Pogacar still leads that competition, Carapaz reduced the gap and remains firmly in contention as the race enters its decisive stages.
Overall Standings Remain Competitive
With only a few stages remaining, the battle for both the general classification and the mountains competition is expected to remain highly competitive.
