Elon Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX has carried out another major test of its next-generation Starship rocket, with the vehicle completing a largely successful mission that ended in a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean.

The massive rocket lifted off from Starbase, Texas on its 12th test flight, marking the first major Starship launch in several months. The flight tested upgraded systems designed for future deep-space missions, including lunar and Mars exploration.

Key highlights of the mission

The Super Heavy booster successfully launched the Starship into space before separating as planned. However, the booster was not recovered and descended into the Gulf of Mexico, as recovery was not part of the mission objective.

The upper stage spacecraft continued its journey, performing a key “flip” maneuver in space and reigniting engines to stabilize its orientation, even though one engine experienced a malfunction during flight.

The spacecraft also deployed 22 mock satellites for testing purposes, including experimental units designed to capture images of the vehicle’s heat shield during reentry.

Splashdown in the Indian Ocean

Despite minor technical issues during the flight, the Starship completed its mission with a controlled but fiery splashdown in the Indian Ocean. SpaceX later confirmed the landing and described the mission as a success in achieving key test objectives.

Official reaction and social media updates

🚀 “Splashdown confirmed!”

Starship’s 12th flight achieved key test goals, including satellite deployment and in-space maneuvers. A few issues occurred, but overall a successful mission for next-generation space development.

Elon Musk also praised the mission on social media, calling the flight “a big step forward” and highlighting the team’s progress toward future missions beyond Earth orbit.

Looking ahead

The latest Starship test comes as SpaceX continues developing the vehicle for NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon later this decade. Future versions of Starship are expected to play a key role in lunar landings and eventually Mars exploration.

Space experts say that while the mission was not perfect, it provided valuable data and demonstrated important improvements in the upgraded Starship design.
