This WhatsApp Rival App Will Work Without Internet

Jack Dorsey Launches Bitchat: A Private, Offline Messaging App Powered by Bluetooth

Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, has unveiled Bitchatโ€”a new, peer-to-peer messaging app that works entirely without internet access. The app operates over Bluetooth mesh networks, allowing users to chat securely and privately even without mobile data or Wi-Fi.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Available now in beta through Appleโ€™s TestFlight, Bitchat is being described as an experimental project aimed at exploring decentralized communication, mesh networking, and end-to-end encryption.

Messaging Without Internet or Phone Numbers

Unlike traditional messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger, which rely on cloud servers and internet connectivity, Bitchat allows users to send messages directly through nearby devices using Bluetooth.

Hereโ€™s how it works:

  • ๐Ÿ”— Forms Bluetooth mesh networks dynamically as users move around.

  • ๐Ÿ“ก Messages can โ€œhopโ€ from one device to another, extending communication beyond the standard Bluetooth range.

  • ๐ŸŒ No phone number, SIM card, or internet connection is required.

To reach wider distances, users can deploy bridge devices, enabling the system to cover entire buildings or neighborhoods.

Built with Privacy in Mind

Bitchatโ€™s top features focus on privacy and user control:

  • ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ Messages are fully encrypted and never stored on a central server.

  • ๐Ÿ•“ Chats are temporary and disappear automatically from devices.

  • ๐Ÿ”’ Users can create private group chats, called โ€œroomsโ€, organized with hashtags and protected by passwords.

  • ๐Ÿ’พ A โ€œstore-and-forwardโ€ feature saves messages for offline users and delivers them once they reconnect to the mesh network.

Future Updates and Broader Connectivity

The team behind Bitchat plans to expand its capabilities by integrating Wi-Fi Direct, which will boost both the data transfer speed and range of the appโ€”without compromising its offline functionality.

A Decentralized Alternative to Big Tech Messaging

Bitchat draws inspiration from communication tools used during the 2019 Hong Kong protests, which allowed secure communication in the absence of reliable internet. It aligns with Dorsey’s broader vision of decentralized platforms, also reflected in his work with Bluesky and Damus.

By eliminating reliance on centralized infrastructure and third-party data storage, Bitchat provides a unique solution for those seeking privacy, censorship resistance, and autonomy in how they communicate.
