Three Fertilizer Plants Suspend Urea Production Amid LNG Supply Cuts
Three major fertilizer plants in Pakistan have temporarily suspended urea production after a reduction in Re-gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) supplies, following the government’s decision to curtail gas availability in light of the current regional situation.
The affected plants include:
- Fatima Fertilizer
- FFC Port Qasim
- Agritech Limited
Production Halt Expected Until Mid-August
According to market analysts, the suspension of gas supplies has forced all three facilities to stop urea production.
The shutdown is currently expected to continue until around mid-August, although the timeline may change depending on government decisions and the restoration of RLNG supplies. If gas availability improves sooner, production could resume earlier.
Government Previously Prioritized Fertilizer Sector
The latest disruption comes despite recent government efforts to maintain gas supplies for RLNG-based fertilizer plants to support domestic urea production.
Earlier this month, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) approved gas supply arrangements for key fertilizer manufacturers to help ensure adequate urea availability ahead of the upcoming Rabi crop season.
Impact on Domestic Urea Supply
Pakistan has sufficient installed capacity to meet local urea demand under normal operating conditions.
However, if gas supply disruptions continue for an extended period, domestic urea production could decline, placing additional pressure on available inventories and the overall fertilizer supply chain.
Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely as decisions regarding RLNG distribution continue in the coming weeks.
