UCI Road World Championships 2026: Top Cyclists Set for Montréal Showdown

The world’s leading road cyclists are heading to Montréal, Canada, for the 2026 UCI Road World Championships, which will take place from September 20 to 27.
The eight-day championship will feature 13 events across elite, under-23 and junior categories, with riders competing for the prestigious rainbow jersey.
Among the biggest names expected in action are Remco Evenepoel, Demi Vollering, Tom Pidcock, Filippo Ganna, Lotte Kopecky and Kristen Faulkner.
Montréal Ready to Host World Championships
The championships return to North America for the first time in more than a decade.
Montréal is already familiar with international cycling, having hosted the annual Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal, which has been part of the UCI World Tour since 2010.
The city’s challenging terrain is expected to play an important role, particularly during the elite road races, which will feature repeated climbs around Mount Royal Park.
Two-time reigning men’s road race world champion Tadej Pogačar will not compete after ending his 2026 season early following a collarbone injury sustained at the Vuelta a España.
His absence could open the competition for a new men’s road race world champion.
Remco Evenepoel Leads Men’s Time Trial Field
Double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel will be among the leading contenders in the men’s elite time trial.
The Belgian has enjoyed strong performances against the clock and recently demonstrated his form during the hilly time trial at the 2026 Tour de France.
However, the Montréal time trial course is considerably flatter. The route covers 39.2 kilometres with approximately 220 metres of elevation gain.
That profile could suit powerful specialists such as Italy’s Filippo Ganna and Switzerland’s Stefan Küng.
Ganna has previously won a Giro d’Italia time trial, while Küng enters the championships after winning the time trial on Stage 18 of the 2026 Vuelta a España.
Demi Vollering Targets First World Title
The women’s elite events will feature a strong field led by Dutch rider Demi Vollering.
Vollering has enjoyed an impressive 2026 season, winning both the Giro d’Italia Women and Tour de France Femmes.
She will be looking to add her first elite world championship title in Montréal.
Reigning world champion Marlen Reusser will also be among the major contenders in the time trial. Other notable riders include reigning U23 champion Zoe Bäckstedt.
Reusser defeated Vollering and Bäckstedt during their previous time-trial meeting at the 2026 Tour de France Femmes.
The Montréal course is almost twice as long, however, and its largely flat profile is expected to reward riders with strong aerodynamic and power-based performances.
Tom Pidcock Among Men’s Road Race Contenders
The men’s elite road race will provide a very different challenge from the time trial.
The course covers 273.7 kilometres and includes approximately 3,808 metres of climbing, creating a demanding test of endurance and tactics.
Remco Evenepoel will be among the riders to watch, alongside Isaac Del Toro, Paul Seixas and Tom Pidcock.
Del Toro recently won the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal, while Seixas finished second in the same race on September 13.
Pidcock, the Paris 2024 mountain bike Olympic champion, will attempt to add a road cycling world title to his achievements in mountain biking and cyclo-cross.
Strong Competition in Women’s Road Race
The women’s elite road race will cover 180.4 kilometres, with riders facing around 2,570 metres of climbing.
Vollering will enter the race as one of the leading contenders following her successful Grand Tour season.
She will face strong competition from riders including Lotte Kopecky, Elisa Longo Borghini, Katarzyna Niewiadoma and Paula Blasi.
Canadian fans will also have a major home rider to support in Magdeleine Vallieres, who won the 2025 women’s elite road race after making a late solo attack.
American Olympic champion Kristen Faulkner will also be among the riders representing North American cycling.
