UN Commission Releases Report on Impact of Gaza Conflict on Palestinian Children

A United Nations inquiry has released a report examining the impact of the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the occupied West Bank on Palestinian children since the outbreak of hostilities in October 2023.

According to the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, children have been among the most affected groups during the conflict, with significant casualties and humanitarian challenges reported throughout the region.

Findings of the Report

The commission stated that a large number of children have lost their lives during the conflict and expressed concern about the humanitarian conditions affecting young people in Gaza.

The report estimates that children accounted for a substantial share of conflict-related fatalities during the period under review. It also highlighted concerns regarding displacement, access to healthcare, nutrition, education and psychological well-being.

According to the commission, continued military operations in densely populated areas have contributed to high civilian casualties, including children. The report further noted that disruptions to healthcare services and humanitarian assistance have affected vulnerable populations across Gaza.

Israel Rejects Allegations

Israeli authorities rejected the findings of the report, describing its conclusions as inaccurate and biased.

In a statement, Israel said it remains committed to protecting civilians and argued that the report does not adequately reflect the security challenges it faces or the actions of armed groups operating in Gaza.

Israeli officials also pointed to efforts aimed at facilitating medical assistance, humanitarian support and healthcare services during the conflict.

Concerns in the West Bank

The commission’s report also examined conditions in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem. It expressed concern about reports of violence, detention practices and the treatment of minors during security operations.

The report called for the protection of children’s rights and emphasized the importance of ensuring compliance with international humanitarian and human rights standards.

Ongoing International Attention

The humanitarian impact of the conflict continues to draw international attention, with governments, aid organizations and international institutions calling for measures to protect civilians and improve access to essential services.

The findings and conclusions contained in the report remain the subject of ongoing discussion among international organizations, governments and other stakeholders involved in efforts to address the conflict and its humanitarian consequences.
