WhatsApp Begins Testing New Restricted Chat Feature
WhatsApp has started testing a new Restricted Chat feature for selected users enrolled in its Android and iOS beta programs. The feature is designed to give users more control over how content from specific conversations can be accessed, saved, or shared.
Restricted Chat was previously spotted during development as an extension of WhatsApp’s Advanced Chat Privacy feature. According to reports, the option is currently available to some beta testers using WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.36.4 and WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.39.10.20.
How Restricted Chat Works
Restricted Chat is an optional feature and does not apply automatically to existing conversations. Users need to activate it manually through the chat information screen.
After the feature is enabled, WhatsApp applies several additional restrictions to the selected conversation.
A Restricted Chat prevents users from:
- Automatically saving media from the conversation to their devices
- Exporting the chat
- Using Meta AI features within the conversation
- Opening or accessing the chat through linked devices
The restriction on linked devices could provide an additional layer of protection against unauthorized access through unofficial WhatsApp clients or AI-based tools.
End-to-End Encryption Remains Active
WhatsApp says its standard end-to-end encryption continues to protect messages and calls when Restricted Chat is enabled. The new feature is intended to provide additional controls over how conversation content can be accessed or moved outside the chat.
This means Restricted Chat works as an extra privacy layer rather than replacing WhatsApp’s existing encryption system.
Feature Not Yet Available to Everyone
WhatsApp has not yet confirmed when Restricted Chat will be released for all users. At present, the feature is being tested with a limited number of beta users on Android and iOS.
The company may continue refining the feature based on testing and user feedback before deciding on a wider public rollout.
