Women’s Baseball World Cup Opening Day Postponed Due to Heavy Rain in Tainan

The opening day of the WBSC/RAXUS Women’s Baseball World Cup Group Tainan 2026 has been postponed because of severe weather conditions in Tainan, Taiwan.

All three games scheduled for Sunday, August 23, were called off after the Tainan City Government declared an emergency due to persistent heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding.

Heavy Rain Affects Tainan

The weather conditions were linked to a low-pressure system and strong southwesterly winds, bringing significant rainfall across the city.

Some parts of Tainan recorded more than 250 millimeters of rain, while flooding temporarily affected several low-lying roads.

Authorities also carried out large-scale water drainage operations as they worked to manage the impact of the rainfall. The Nanhua Reservoir reached full capacity and began overflowing.

Due to the weather situation, Tainan and several other cities in southern Taiwan suspended work and classes.

Day 2 Games to Continue Without Spectators

Following discussions between the local organising committee and authorities, the second day of the tournament is scheduled to go ahead on Monday, August 24.

However, the games will be played behind closed doors because the emergency declaration remains in effect.

The tournament features six national teams competing in Group Tainan, with teams aiming to secure qualification for the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Finals.

The organisers will continue to monitor weather and local conditions while working with authorities to ensure the safety of players, officials and staff.

The revised schedule for the postponed opening-day games will be announced by the organisers.
