3D-Printed Contact Lenses Move Closer to Clinical Reality, Researchers Say

Researchers in Canada have developed a new approach that could make custom 3D-printed contact lenses a practical option in the future, potentially allowing patients to receive personalized lenses during a single eye care appointment.

The research, published in the journal Materials & Design, suggests that specially designed rigid contact lenses could eventually be produced in as little as 20 minutes using advanced 3D printing technology.

Personalized Vision Care

The research team, led by Dr. Shirley Tang at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, says the technology is designed to create contact lenses tailored to each individual’s eye.

According to the researchers, the inner surface of each lens is shaped to closely match the patient’s cornea, while the outer surface is customized to provide the required vision correction. This personalized design aims to improve comfort, fit, and visual performance.

Dr. Tang said the development represents an important step toward more individualized eye care solutions, combining precise customization with the optical quality expected from commercially available contact lenses.

New Material Enables 3D Printing

One of the main challenges in producing contact lenses through 3D printing has been the material itself. Traditional silicone used in commercial contact lenses is generally not suitable for standard 3D printing techniques.

To address this issue, the research team developed a new silicone-based formulation that is compatible with 3D printing while maintaining the transparency and mechanical properties needed for contact lenses.

Future Potential

Although the technology is still in the research stage, the scientists believe it could simplify the manufacturing process for specialty contact lenses in the future.

If further testing and regulatory approvals are successful, eye care professionals may eventually be able to design, print, and fit customized contact lenses during a single clinic visit, reducing waiting times and offering more personalized vision correction.
