OpenAI’s ChatGPT-Like Web Browser is Coming to Take Google Chrome’s Throne

OpenAI Set to Launch AI-Powered Web Browser Challenging Google Chrome

OpenAI is preparing to release a new AI-powered web browser aimed at competing directly with Google Chrome, according to sources cited by Reuters. The browser, expected to launch within weeks, will integrate OpenAI’s advanced AI tools—like its digital assistant Operator—offering users a smarter, more interactive browsing experience.

Unlike traditional browsers, OpenAI’s new platform will feature a ChatGPT-style interface that helps users complete tasks, find answers, and engage with web content through AI, reducing the need for conventional navigation.

Built on Chromium—the same open-source foundation used by Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera—OpenAI’s browser aims to give users greater control over their data by keeping interactions within its own environment. This move could disrupt Google’s dominance in search and advertising by limiting reliance on traditional web traffic and Google Search.

With over 500 million weekly active ChatGPT users, OpenAI’s browser launch could shake up the browser market, where Chrome currently holds more than two-thirds share globally. Apple’s Safari follows with about 16%.

OpenAI has also been recruiting former Google engineers, including some who helped build Chrome, to develop this new platform. Reports suggest that OpenAI even considered acquiring Chrome if regulatory actions force Google to divest it.

Meanwhile, other AI-powered browsers from startups like Perplexity, The Browser Company, and Brave are also emerging, integrating AI to enhance search, summarization, and task automation.

This development marks a significant step in blending AI with everyday internet use, promising a more intuitive and personalized online experience for users worldwide.
