Florian Wirtz Unfazed by Record Transfer Fee as He Prepares for Premier League Debut with Liverpool
Florian Wirtz has played down the significance of his transfer fee after joining Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in what could become a British record deal.
The highly rated attacking midfielder signed for an initial £100 million, potentially rising to £116 million with performance-based add-ons. Despite the massive figure, Wirtz remains focused on his performance on the pitch.
“I don’t think about it. I just want to play football. The amount of money exchanged between clubs doesn’t matter to me,” the 22-year-old said following Liverpool’s 3-2 friendly victory over Athletic Bilbao at Anfield on Monday.
He added:
“The big challenge is to win the title again. I’ll focus on creating chances, working hard without the ball, and using my energy to help the team. I believe I can improve my teammates’ positions and help us achieve success.”
Adapting to the Premier League
Wirtz acknowledged that the Premier League presents new challenges compared to the Bundesliga.
“It’s more intense and physical. Every player is strong and fast. But I’m looking forward to the challenge and believe I can grow and learn here,” he said.
Liverpool’s Upcoming Fixtures
Liverpool will begin their competitive season on Sunday in the Community Shield against FA Cup winners Crystal Palace, followed by their Premier League opener against Bournemouth at Anfield on August 15.
Active in the Transfer Market
Liverpool have been one of the busiest clubs in the transfer window, spending over £250 million so far. Alongside Wirtz, the club has signed Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong (also from Leverkusen), and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Reports also suggest Liverpool submitted a £110 million bid—potentially rising with add-ons—for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, which was rejected.
Slot Praises New Signings, Reflects on Changes
Manager Arne Slot remains optimistic but cautious about the new season, emphasizing that there’s still “room for improvement” despite last season’s record-equalling 20th league title.
“We’ve added some extra weapons,” Slot said. “Florian brings creativity in the final third. We’ve lost creativity from the back with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid, but Florian has special qualities in a different role.”

Liverpool paid an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota, whose tragic passing in a recent car accident in Spain alongside his brother Andre Silva has deeply affected the club.
