Petrol and Diesel Sales Fall Sharply in Pakistan During August

Fuel sales by Pakistan’s oil marketing companies (OMCs) declined significantly in August 2026, as higher petrol and diesel prices put pressure on overall demand.

According to Topline Securities, total OMC sales fell 3 percent year-on-year (YoY) and 16 percent month-on-month (MoM) to around 1.3 million tons during the month.

The decline came despite a strong rise in furnace oil sales, which increased more than four times compared with August last year and rose 26 percent from July.

Furnace Oil Demand Rises

The sharp increase in furnace oil consumption was linked to greater demand for the fuel amid LNG shortages and increased load shedding in Punjab.

When furnace oil is excluded, overall OMC sales declined 9 percent YoY and 23 percent MoM to approximately 1.2 million tons.

During the first two months of fiscal year 2027, total OMC sales reached 2.8 million tons, representing a 10 percent increase compared with the same period last year. Sales excluding furnace oil also increased 7 percent to 2.7 million tons.

Petrol and Diesel Consumption Drops

Petrol sales declined 1 percent YoY and 9 percent MoM to 666,000 tons in August.

High-speed diesel recorded a more significant decline, with sales falling 19 percent YoY and 32 percent MoM to 422,000 tons.

The weaker demand came as fuel prices increased considerably during the month.

Motor spirit averaged around Rs. 334 per liter in August, marking a 26 percent YoY increase and a 6 percent rise from July.

High-speed diesel averaged approximately Rs. 379 per liter, up 36 percent compared with last year and 11 percent from the previous month.

Attock Petroleum Gains Market Share

Among the listed oil marketing companies, Attock Petroleum recorded sales of 121,000 tons in August.

Its sales increased 8 percent YoY but declined 5 percent compared with July. The company’s market share rose by 119 basis points to 9.61 percent.

Pakistan State Oil (PSO) remained the largest player among the companies highlighted, with sales of 570,000 tons.

PSO’s sales increased 4 percent YoY but fell 19 percent MoM. Its market share declined by 131 basis points to 45.21 percent, largely due to a major reduction in furnace oil sales.

The company sold only 23 tons of furnace oil during August.

Other OMCs Also Report Changes

Wafi Energy posted sales of 107,000 tons during the month, representing a 1 percent YoY increase but an 18 percent decline from July.

Hascol Petroleum recorded sales of 35,000 tons, down 16 percent both YoY and MoM.

Among the listed companies highlighted in the report, Hascol was the only one to record a year-on-year decline in sales.
