Venus Williams Falls to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in Cincinnati Open Return Match
CINCINNATI — Tennis icon Venus Williams made her return to the court on Thursday at the Cincinnati Open, but fell short in the first round, losing 6-4, 6-4 to rising Spanish star Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
The match marked a continued comeback for the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, who recently resumed her career after more than a year away from professional play.
“Just coming back, not everything’s going to be perfect,” said Williams. “I played four matches in four days in D.C., so I’ve been focusing a lot on building physically. After today, I feel great, and that’s definitely a positive.”
Looking Ahead to the U.S. Open
Despite the early exit in Cincinnati, Venus Williams is already preparing for her next challenge — the U.S. Open, starting August 19. She has received a wild-card entry to compete in mixed doubles alongside Reilly Opelka.
Throughout her legendary career, Venus has won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles with her sister Serena Williams, along with two mixed doubles Grand Slam titles.
A Memorable Match for Bouzas Maneiro
Ranked No. 51 in the world, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro continues her impressive breakout season. The 21-year-old reached her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Montreal last week and added another highlight by defeating one of the sport’s all-time greats.
“She’s a legend,” Bouzas Maneiro said. “It was a privilege to play her. I just tried to enjoy every moment. She’s an inspiration to all of us young players.”
Legacy Continues
While the result wasn’t what fans may have hoped for, Venus Williams’ return is a reminder of her enduring passion and influence on the sport. Her presence continues to inspire both fans and a new generation of players.
