Ukraine’s rising star Iulian Boiko secured a strong 4-1 win over Zak Surety in the second round of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters, showcasing his growing potential as he embarks on his second professional tour spell.
Boiko, who first turned pro at just 14 in 2020, spent two years on tour before returning to the amateur ranks. This year, he regained his tour card by winning the European Under-21 Championship. At 19, Boiko aims to climb the rankings, and his convincing victory over Surety—one of last season’s most improved players—marks a positive step forward. Boiko’s next challenge is against Jackson Page on Sunday.
“It feels great, I played a good match,” said Boiko, who impressed with breaks of 57, 54, 54, 53, and 51. “This season, I plan to play more practice matches, especially against top players. I used to practice mostly solo, which meant I didn’t learn enough from others. That’s the main thing I’m working to change.”
Other notable results included Latvia’s Artemijs Zizins edging out Ken Doherty 4-3 in a thrilling finish, with the deciding frame coming down to a crucial missed long pot from Doherty. Belgium’s Julien Leclercq defeated Umut Dikme 4-1, while Allan Taylor edged Mohamed Shehab 4-3, thanks to a 62 break in the decider.
Thailand’s tour rookie Chatchapong Nasa overcame a tough start after being docked the opening frame for arriving late but rallied to win 4-3 against David Lilley, sealing the match with key pots on the brown, blue, and pink balls.
