Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie Stay Confident as All Blacks Welcome Richie Moβungaβs Return
New Zealand rugby fans have a reason to celebrate as Richie Moβunga prepares to rejoin the All Blacks after signing a new contract with the Crusaders, the Super Rugby club where he won seven titles between 2017 and 2023. The deal also paves the way for a reunion with coach Ian Robertson, who recently took charge of the All Blacks.
Moβungaβs move back to New Zealand comes after completing three seasons with Japanβs Toshiba Brave Lupus, followed by a few NPC games for Canterbury, which will restore his eligibility for the national team.
Coach Ian Robertson expressed excitement about Moβungaβs return, saying, βNew Zealand Rugby and fans are really pleased to have Richie back in our game, especially with the Rugby World Cup ahead. He has served our country for a long time, and weβre proud to retain such committed players.β
The All Blacks face The Rugby Championship opener against Argentina this weekend, with key players Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie available after recovering from injuries. Some pundits have speculated that Moβungaβs return signals a lack of confidence in Barrett and McKenzie, but Robertson dismissed these concerns.
βNo. Theyβre big boys, they know the game,β Robertson said. βThe jersey is bigger than everyone. Itβs always earned, and thatβs what makes it exciting.β
Barrett, recently recovered from a fractured hand, and McKenzie are set to compete alongside Moβunga, boosting New Zealandβs chances against the Pumas, who defeated them in last yearβs championship opener.
