Bangladesh to Replace Pakistan in Asia Cup After PHF Withdraws

The Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) has officially invited Bangladesh to participate in the upcoming Asia Cup, set to take place in Jharkhand, India. The invitation comes after the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) withdrew from the tournament, citing security concerns. The Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF) confirmed on Monday that it has accepted the invitation and will compete in the tournament, which is scheduled to run from August 27 to September 7.

The invitation letter was sent by Hockey India, with an official from the organization stating that the Indian government was ready to issue visas for the Pakistani team. However, the PHF formally declined to participate in the tournament, sending a letter to the AHF confirming their withdrawal.

In light of Pakistan’s decision, Hockey India extended the invitation to Bangladesh to take its place in the competition. The timing of Pakistan’s withdrawal has raised questions, as it occurred after visa applications had been submitted at the end of July.

Additionally, there is uncertainty regarding Pakistan’s participation in the Junior Hockey World Cup, with the junior team’s status still unclear.

The PHF is expected to announce its official stance on the Asia Cup withdrawal in the coming days.

PHF President Responds to Media Speculation

Earlier this month, PHF President Tariq Bugti addressed reports suggesting that Pakistan would not participate in the Asia Cup. He clarified that the final decision rests with the Government of Pakistan, not the federation. Bugti emphasized that no official discussions had taken place regarding participation and that the PHF would follow whatever directive the government issued.

“There has been no communication with Hockey India, and we haven’t made any decision about the Asia Cup. Our communication is with the Asian Hockey Federation, not Hockey India,” Bugti stated.

He further denied reports that Bangladesh would replace Pakistan in the tournament, saying that the PHF had not been informed of any such move. “We are unaware of any invitation extended to Bangladesh to replace us,” Bugti added.

As the Asia Cup draws near, the situation remains fluid, and fans will be eagerly awaiting the final decisions from the relevant authorities. The Asia Cup is expected to feature intense competition and provide exciting opportunities for teams from across the continent. Stay tuned for more updates.
