Fulham 1-1 Manchester United: Smith Rowe Cancels Out Own Goal as Fernandes Misses Penalty
Manchester United’s search for their first win of the new Premier League season continues after a 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage. Despite moments of promise, Ruben Amorim’s side once again struggled to control the game, leaving more questions than answers after two matches.
Missed Opportunities for United
United started brightly, with Matheus Cunha twice going close—first shooting narrowly over and later striking the post. However, the early energy did not translate into dominance. Their best chance of the first half came from the penalty spot after Mason Mount was brought down by Calvin Bassey, but captain Bruno Fernandes fired his effort over the bar.
Goals at Either End
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the second half, though not in the way United would have hoped. A corner taken by United was flicked on by Leny Yoro, and the ball found its way into the net via a deflection off Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz for an own goal.
United, however, were unable to build on their lead. Just minutes later, substitute Emile Smith Rowe equalised for Fulham, timing his run perfectly to slot past goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.
Familiar Concerns for Amorim’s Side
While United’s new signings showed glimpses of quality, familiar issues persisted. Despite strong defensive moments from Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, the midfield struggled to impose control, allowing Fulham to grow into the match. Manager Marco Silva later praised his team for “commanding the game with the ball” after the opening stages.
The draw means United have just one point from their opening two fixtures, with their only goal so far coming from an own goal. For Amorim, the concern is less about individual mistakes and more about a system that often leaves the midfield exposed and unable to sustain pressure.
Looking Ahead
United’s supporters made their frustrations clear late in the game, urging the team to attack as chances went begging. With the club still linked to potential midfield reinforcements, Amorim may need solutions quickly if his side is to avoid a repeat of last season’s struggles.
