Dam breach in India made flooding worse

Flooding in Punjab Worsened by Madhopur Barrage Damage in India

Islamabad: Flooding in Punjab intensified after the middle section of India’s Madhopur barrage on the Ravi River was damaged, leading to uncontrolled water flow into Pakistan.

Reuters reported that video footage broadcast by Indian media showed the collapse of part of the barrage, which contributed to flooding in areas of Lahore on Friday.

Pakistani officials stated that the breach resulted in a sudden surge of water across the border.

An Indian government source confirmed that two gates of the Madhopur barrage had broken but denied any deliberate attempt to flood Pakistan. Authorities said efforts were underway to control the flow, including regulation by the Ranjit Sagar Dam upstream.

The Indian official attributed the incident to continuous heavy rainfall and said measures were being taken to manage the situation on the Ravi River.
