Olympic Champion Gabby Thomas to Miss World Athletics Championships Due to Injury

TOKYO – US track star and Olympic gold medalist Gabby Thomas will miss the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next week because of an Achilles injury, NBC Sports reported on Tuesday.

Thomas, who won three gold medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics in the Women’s 200m, 4x100m, and 4x400m relays, has been managing the injury since May, with the condition worsening in July.

In a statement, the 28-year-old said:

β€œI understand that it will be disappointing for some track fans, but I’ve realised it’s OK to be human and take care of myself. As an athlete, you always want to keep grinding, but sometimes you simply can’t outwork an injury.”

Thomas emphasized the importance of patience and making long-term decisions for her career:

β€œSometimes it’s about patience and making the right decision for the long term. All the best to my Team USA teammates fighting for medals in Tokyo.”

The World Athletics Championships will be held from September 13 to 21.
