Rain starts in parts of Karachi as Met Office warns of urban flooding

Fresh Rain Spell Hits Karachi, PMD Warns of Urban Flooding

Parts of Karachi received rainfall on Sunday evening as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast a new spell of showers that is expected to continue until Thursday, September 11.

Areas Affected

According to local reports, rain was observed in Bahria Town, Liaquatabad, Federal B Area, North Karachi, North Nazimabad, Scheme-33, Gulshan-i-Hadeed, and along the M-9 Motorway.

PMD Forecast

The Met Office predicted rain-wind/thundershowers with isolated heavy to very heavy falls in Karachi over the next few days. It also cautioned that the spell may cause urban flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

At 5 PM, the department issued a weather warning, directing civic and disaster management authorities to stay on high alert.

Rainfall Across Sindh

The PMD also forecast widespread rain and thunderstorms in multiple districts, including Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, and Jamshoro. Moderate to heavy showers are also expected in Larkana, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Sukkur, Jacobabad, and Ghotki until Thursday.

Fresh showers have already been reported in Umerkot, Tharparkar, and Tando Muhammad Khan.

Karachi’s Flood Risk

The warning comes just weeks after 15 people lost their lives during heavy rains in August, which caused severe damage to Karachi’s infrastructure, power outages, and internet disruptions. Most casualties occurred due to collapsing structures, electrocution, and drowning.

Authorities have urged residents to take precautions as the new spell unfolds.
