Punjab Launches Pakistan’s First Modern Air Quality Forecast System
Punjab has introduced Pakistan’s first modern air quality forecast system, designed to predict both weather conditions and pollution levels across the province. The initiative was launched under the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, officials from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed on Saturday.
Helping Major Cities
According to provincial authorities, the new system will provide reliable monitoring and forecasting for Lahore, Faisalabad, and other major urban centers. The goal is to help reduce air pollution and protect public health.
How the System Works
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb explained that the system combines real-time monitoring with advanced forecasting models, using international platforms such as Windy and Euro, while adapting them for local conditions.
She added that data from 41 modern air quality monitoring stations, installed earlier this year, will feed into the system. The network will expand to 100 stations in the near future.
Benefits and Impact
Experts say the automated system will:
-
Track pollution levels and weather changes.
-
Issue health advisories for the public.
-
Support the government in making science-based policies.
Aurangzeb praised the Environment Department and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for their efforts, calling the project an important part of Punjab’s anti-smog action plan. Other measures under the plan include action against crop residue burning, vehicle emissions, and industrial pollution.
