Over 300 Injured, 400 Arrested Amid Morocco Protests for Reforms

More than 300 people were injured and over 400 arrested in Morocco on Tuesday as demonstrations entered their fourth consecutive day. The protests, largely youth-led, called for improvements in the country’s public health and education sectors.
The rallies were organised under the banner of GenZ 212, a newly formed collective that has gained traction among young Moroccans. While most demonstrations began peacefully, some turned violent in cities such as Oujda and Inzegane.
According to government spokesperson Rachid El Khalfi, 263 police officers sustained injuries of varying degrees, while 23 protesters were also hurt — including one who required hospitalisation in Oujda.
Authorities reported that 409 individuals were detained after incidents of vandalism and arson, which left more than 140 police vehicles and 20 private cars damaged. In some areas, protesters reportedly targeted government offices, banks, and shops.
Television footage showed tense scenes in Inzegane, where confrontations lasted several hours. Videos circulating online also depicted small groups throwing stones and setting fire to bins near commercial areas.
Prosecutors confirmed that an initial group of 37 people will face trial in connection with the unrest.
GenZ 212 later expressed regret over the violence, clarifying that its mission is to serve as a platform for dialogue on critical issues such as education, healthcare, and tackling corruption.
Despite progress in some areas, Morocco continues to face challenges linked to social inequality, with notable disparities between regions and a wide gap between public and private sector services.
