Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027: Format, Draw, Pools, Dates, Tickets & Everything You Need to Know
The countdown has begun! The Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 is set to be the biggest tournament in the sport’s history, with 24 teams competing for the prestigious Webb Ellis Cup in Australia. The opening match will be played on 1 October 2027 at Perth Stadium, marking a new era for international rugby.
Here’s a complete guide to the tournament format, pools, qualification, venues, and ticket sales.
📌 A Historic Expansion: 24 Teams, New Format
For the first time, the Rugby World Cup will feature 24 teams instead of 20. This brings exciting changes:
-
Six Pools of Four Teams Each
-
The top two teams from each pool progress to the Round of 16.
-
The four best third-placed teams also qualify.
-
Criteria include competition points, points difference, and try difference.
This new system guarantees more action, with 52 matches scheduled (up from 48 in 2023). However, each team will still play the same maximum number of games (seven) if they reach the final — ensuring no extra workload for players.
🏉 Knockout Stage: Round of 16 Explained
Instead of jumping directly from pool play to quarter-finals, the Round of 16 will now be the first knockout stage.
-
Pool winners A–D will face third-placed teams.
-
Pool winners E–F will face group runners-up.
-
Quarter-finals will then balance the matchups to ensure fairness.
This format increases the drama, jeopardy, and unpredictability, with more opportunities for underdog stories.
🌍 Qualified Teams So Far
12 teams automatically qualified by finishing in the top three of their pools at Rugby World Cup 2023:
-
France, New Zealand, Italy, Ireland, South Africa, Scotland, Wales, Fiji, Australia, England, Argentina, Japan.
11 more have joined through continental tournaments:
-
Georgia, Spain, Romania, Portugal, Tonga, Canada, USA, Uruguay, Chile, Zimbabwe, Hong Kong China.
The final spot will be decided in November 2025 at a qualification event in Dubai featuring Namibia, Belgium, Samoa, and the winner of Brazil vs Paraguay.
