Faisalabad’s long wait for international cricket has finally come to an end. The historic Iqbal Cricket Stadium came alive once again as Pakistan faced South Africa in the first ODI of a three-match series, marking the city’s first international match in 17 years.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi celebrated the occasion on social media, calling it a proud moment for both Faisalabad and Pakistan cricket.
“After 17 long years, international cricket finally returns to Faisalabad,” Naqvi shared on X (formerly Twitter).
“Delighted to see the excitement as Pakistan and South Africa begin the ODI series here in Pakistan’s own ‘Manchester’. The passion of Faisalabad’s people for cricket is truly unmatched.”
Naqvi also confirmed that Iqbal Stadium will continue to feature regularly in Pakistan’s international cricket schedule.
“Insha’Allah, Faisalabad will continue to host international matches in the future,” he added.
The city last hosted an ODI on April 11, 2008, when Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets. Seventeen years later, Faisalabad has reclaimed its place on the nation’s cricketing map with packed stands and electric energy.
So far, Iqbal Stadium has hosted 17 ODIs, including three Pakistan–South Africa clashes, where the home side has won twice.
