US Says Iran Can Compete in 2026 FIFA World Cup, But Entry Rules Will Apply for Certain Individuals

The United States has said that Iran’s national football team will be allowed to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while certain accompanying individuals with security-related concerns may face entry restrictions.

The tournament is scheduled to be held across the United States, Mexico, and Canada starting June 11, 2026.

Statement from US Officials

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there is no objection to Iranian players taking part in the competition. However, he noted that restrictions could apply to individuals linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

He clarified that the policy would not target athletes themselves, but could affect non-sporting personnel traveling with the team.

Focus on Player Participation

US officials emphasized that the goal is to ensure athletes are not impacted by political or security-related issues.

Former US President Donald Trump also stated that his administration would not seek to interfere with players’ participation in the tournament.

Background on Tournament Participation

Iran has qualified for the World Cup, while earlier discussions included suggestions that other teams could replace it, which were not officially pursued.

Iran had previously requested adjustments to its match venues, but those requests were not accepted by FIFA.

Global Context

The situation comes amid broader regional tensions, but officials confirmed that there is currently no indication Iran will withdraw from the tournament.

FIFA has maintained that qualified teams will participate as scheduled.

Outlook

With preparations continuing, organizers are focused on ensuring security and smooth participation for all qualified teams in the upcoming World Cup across North America.
