Punjab Plans to Make Major Lahore Markets Plastic-Free
The Punjab government has announced a gradual plan to declare major markets in Lahore as plastic-free zones as part of efforts to reduce the use of banned plastic bags.
The initiative was discussed during a visit to Ichhra Market by the Parliamentary Secretary for Environment and senior officials from the environmental department, along with representatives of local traders.
Crackdown on Banned Plastic Bags
Officials stated that the government is enforcing a strict policy against the use of plastic bags below 75 microns, which remain prohibited under provincial regulations.
Authorities confirmed that large-scale operations have already resulted in the seizure of more than 400,000 kilograms of banned plastic bags across Punjab, including over 100,000 kilograms in Lahore alone.
Enforcement Actions in Markets
During recent inspections in different commercial areas, including Mochi Gate, enforcement teams recovered significant quantities of banned plastic materials as part of ongoing monitoring efforts.
Officials said these operations will continue to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
Environmental Goals
The government’s initiative aims to reduce plastic pollution, promote sustainable alternatives, and improve environmental conditions in urban markets.
Authorities have emphasized that traders and shopkeepers will be engaged in the transition process to ensure smooth implementation of plastic-free zones.
Next Steps
Officials indicated that the plastic-free policy will be expanded gradually to more markets after initial implementation in key commercial areas of Lahore.
