Government Reviews Smart Transformers Proposal to Support Telecom Networks During Loadshedding
The federal government is considering the installation of smart transformers for mobile network operators to help protect telecom infrastructure from prolonged electricity outages across the country.
The proposal was discussed in a Senate Subcommittee on Information Technology, where officials reviewed ongoing challenges affecting mobile and internet services due to frequent power disruptions.
Telecom Services Affected by Power Shortages
During the meeting, officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) informed lawmakers that extended loadshedding is creating operational difficulties for telecom operators in several areas.
According to officials, mobile network towers generally have backup batteries that last only one to two hours. In some regions, electricity outages can continue for up to 12 hours, resulting in disruptions to mobile and internet services.
Although telecom operators are not defaulters of electricity payments, they continue to face challenges in maintaining uninterrupted connectivity due to the unstable power supply.
Proposed Solutions for Network Stability
Authorities are exploring multiple options to improve the resilience of telecom infrastructure. These include the proposed use of smart transformers to ensure a more stable power supply for communication towers.
Telecom companies are also increasingly shifting toward solar-powered systems to reduce dependence on the national electricity grid.
Officials said that improving power stability for telecom infrastructure is essential to ensure reliable internet and mobile connectivity for users across the country.
Growing Importance of Digital Connectivity
The committee also discussed the rising importance of internet access as a critical public service. Members emphasized the need to strengthen digital infrastructure using both traditional energy solutions and emerging technologies.
They also reviewed reports regarding satellite internet services in remote areas. However, officials noted that no satellite internet operators have been formally registered in Pakistan so far.
Lawmakers stressed the importance of improving nationwide connectivity to meet increasing demand for stable and affordable communication services.
