KP Government Raises Stipends for House Officers and Trainee Doctors
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has approved a 15 percent increase in the monthly stipends of House Officers (HOs) and Trainee Medical Officers (TMOs) working at government and autonomous medical institutions across the province.
The revised stipends will be applicable from July 1, 2026, according to separate notifications issued by the KP Finance Department on September 9.
The increase was approved by the provincial cabinet during its 56th meeting held on August 12.
Additional Annual Increase Approved
Along with the 15 percent revision, the provincial government has also approved a further 5 percent annual increase in the stipends.
The annual adjustment will be calculated on the stipend amount payable at the relevant time.
The revised structure will apply to eligible House Officers and Trainee Medical Officers working under government institutions, Medical Teaching Institutions (MTIs), autonomous and semi-autonomous organisations and other relevant bodies.
However, implementation will remain subject to the availability of financial resources and approval from the competent authorities.
Doctors Demand Larger Increase
Despite the government’s decision, representatives of the doctors’ community have called for a significantly higher increase.
Doctors have demanded an immediate 30 percent or greater rise, arguing that inflation has substantially increased living expenses while trainee doctors’ stipends have remained largely unchanged for several years.
The Provincial Doctors Association (PDA) has also announced its support for the ongoing strike by House Officers and TMOs.
PDA Highlights Financial Challenges
The PDA said House Officers and Trainee Medical Officers play an important role in providing healthcare services at teaching and tertiary-care hospitals.
The association has called for improved stipends and allowances, saying the responsibilities and working conditions of trainee doctors should be reflected in their compensation.
According to the PDA, trainee doctors have not received a stipend increase since 2015, despite continued increases in the cost of living.
The association has also raised concerns about the limited availability of residential facilities for House Officers and TMOs at hospitals.
It said the lack of accommodation can add to the financial pressure faced by doctors who are already working in demanding hospital environments.
Revised Stipends to Take Effect From July
With the government’s latest decision, eligible House Officers and Trainee Medical Officers will receive the revised stipend rates from July 1, subject to the applicable institutional procedures and availability of funds.
The development comes amid continued discussions between trainee doctors and authorities over compensation, working conditions and other issues affecting medical professionals in KP.
